Salmon River Falls, an hour north of Syracuse, New York. A beautiful setting, with a wide falls with a 100′ drop. A bend in the river created a horseshoe gorge which presents an amphitheater of long single-pitch ice and mixed (shale) routes. Everything from easy WI3 to overhung M7+. Only a couple miles from the premier salmon hatchery on Lake Ontario, the routes feature amusingly fishy names such as “Mate, Spawn and Die (130′ WI5/M4)” and “Chum (130′ WI5+/M6)”. Our short and inconsistent winters have taken a toll on this area and, unfortunately, we are only getting a few days of safe climbing in recent years.
