Reunion

on

Reunion is a WI4/M4 mixed climb at Chapel Pond, Keene Valley.  Mixed climbing involves “dry-tooling” as well as standard ice climbing.  As you can see, the ice is thin or non-existent in certain parts of this climb.  It is required to use the ice tools and crampons directly on the rock in this case.  That might involve simply balancing the points on small features, camming the tool into a crevasse or off-width, or getting a placement inside a crack, hole or other weakness in the rock.  You often need to use both ice and rock gear to protect the route.  Typically much more pumpy than standard ice climbing, mixed is taking it to the next level, and is very rewarding.
